Almost unexposed to tourism, it is hard to imagine that Vicopisano was once a powerful castle town on the River Arno. However, with over five towers and the famous fortress of Brunelleschi, overlooking the countryside for miles around, one can understand why the Pisans battled with the Florentines for possession of this strategic location during the 14th and 15th centuries.

There are guided tours around the Pretorio Castle, the fortress and the prison on Saturdays and Sundays. Or you can wander around the stone-paved cobbled streets that climb from the village up to the Rocca di Brunelleshi.

Five minutes on the other side of Villa Fiona is the town of Bientina, one of Italy's finest antique furniture centres- a paradise for lovers of restored antique furniture.
